In the past few years, there’s been a troubling surge in teenage depression rates. Even more alarming, many of these teens aren’t getting the help they desperately need. This is unfortunate because untreated depression can lead to devastating long-term consequences, including impaired social relationships, reduced academic and career potential, and increased risk of substance abuse.

At Avery’s House, we understand the heartache of watching your teenager struggle with depression, which is why our team of adolescent mental health experts is committed to providing top-notch, compassionate care. We offer a comprehensive approach that includes therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and family support.

To identify depression in teens, don’t ignore the subtle signs

Teenage depression often manifests as subtle, easily missed signs. All too often, people brush these off as teen moodiness, thinking they’re no big deal. However, missing these signs of depression in teens can cause serious mental health issues to be overlooked.

Symptoms of depression in teens vary from adolescent to adolescent. What seems like typical teenage behavior, however, could, indicate deeper struggles. Parents and guardians, who are usually the first to spot these changes, play a crucial role in early detection and intervention. By recognizing the less obvious signs of depression, you can help prevent your child’s mental health from deteriorating.

At Avery’s House, we urge parents to trust their instincts and seek professional assistance if they notice significant changes in their teen’s behavior. Getting the right help at the right time can foster a brighter future for your child.

Common adolescent depression symptoms

Depression profoundly affects emotions, thought processes, and behavior. While it doesn’t look the same for everyone, several common symptoms are typically observed in adolescents:

  • Feelings of hopelessness and isolation: Experiencing deep despair coupled with a sense of detachment from others
  • Irritability or restlessness: Increased agitation or unease or becoming easily frustrated in situations that wouldn’t have elicited such reaction before
  • Low energy or feeling sluggish: A noticeable drop in energy levels that makes even simple tasks feel draining
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities: A marked decrease in interest or pleasure in once enjoyable activities
  • Appetite and weight changes: Decreased appetite or a tendency to overeat, leading to weight fluctuations
  • Sleep disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep or oversleeping
  • Obsessive or intrusive thoughts: Experiencing recurrent, troubling thoughts
  • Cognitive difficulties: Difficulties in concentration, memory, or decision-making that impact schoolwork and everyday tasks

What causes depression in teens?

When adolescents talk about depression, they typically describe a feeling of constant sadness—like a heavy cloud that won’t lift. They struggle to complete day-to-day activities or even get out of bed in the morning. It’s a deep emotional pain that can be caused by a variety of factors, including

  • Imbalances in brain chemicals that regulate mood and emotions
  • Hormonal changes occurring during puberty and adolescence
  • Genetic factors that make some teens more prone to depression than others
  • Traumatic or stressful events that trigger negative emotions and coping difficulties
  • Abuse of alcohol or other substances that alter brain function and worsen mood
  • Social problems, such as isolation, bullying, or peer pressure
  • Family conflict or instability
